Northwest Africa 14236 (NWA 14236)

Purchased: 2021 Jun

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CH3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Talsint, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is an metal-rich carbonacous chondrite composed of very small chondrules, chondrule and mineral fragments, CAIs and abundant FeNi metal grains (about 20 vol%) set in sparse fine-grained matrix. Chondrules have an apparent mean diameter of about 50 µm with the smaller ones typically being cryptocrystalline or microporphyritic. The meteorite contains distinct C1/2-like matrix lumps.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa14.9±12.0 (Fa0.6-38.7, n=26); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs7.8±3.4Wo0.8±0.3 (Fs3.7-12.7Wo0.5-1.6, n=15); diopside: Fs2.4±0.1Wo47.0±0.2 (Fs2.3-2.5Wo46.8-47.2, n=3); kamacite (all wt.%): Ni=5.7±0.9, Cr=0.38±0.04 , Co=0.26±0.01, P=0.22±0.08, n=7
