Northwest Africa 14286 (NWA 14286) Algeria Purchased: 2021 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3) History: Purchased in 2021, reportedly found in Algeria. Physical characteristics: Four identically appearing stones found together. Exterior covered in dark colored fusion crust. Broken surface reveals many small dark brown chondrules set in a light brown groundmass. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Reflected light microscopy shows numerous small chondrules, most in the 50-300 micron apparent diameter range, many of which are porphyritic. All observed chondrules were less than 500 microns in diameter. Opaques minerals are metal and troilite. Sparse fine-grained CAIs are present. Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa27.6±12.3, Fe/Mn=118±37, Cr2O3=0.09±0.09 wt%, n=32; low-Ca pyroxene Fs2.7±1.1Wo0.9±0.2, n =7; diopside Fs2.1±1.2Wo39.9±1.6, n=3. Oxygen isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): 2 acid-washed fragments analyzed by laser fluorination gave δ18O= -1.851, -2.602; δ17O= -5.781, -6.48; Δ17O= -4.804, -5.106 (linearized, all per mil, TFL slope=0.528). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite CO3 based on oxygen isotopes and chondrule size. Specimens: 22.75 g on deposit at UNM, Simon de Boer holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
