Northwest Africa 14383 (NWA 14383)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated)

History: Puchased by Nicholas Gessler in 2021 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Unbrecciated diabasic specimen with regions of recrystallized plagioclase. Composed of exsolved pigeonite and calcic plagioclase with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite, chromite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (Fs60.6-63.6Wo1.9-5.2, FeO/MnO = 30-32, N = 5), augite (Fs28.1-29.3Wo42.6-42.8, FeO/MnO = 28-32, N = 3), plagioclase (An88.5-89.1Or0.3-0.4, N = 3).

Classification: Eucrite (unbrecciated, in part recrystallized).

Specimens: 24.7 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. N. Gessler.
