Hutchison Icefield 18033 (HUT 18033) 81°28.60733’S, 26°18.21383’W Antarctica, Antarctica Find: 2019 Jan 19 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6) History: The meteorite was recovered as part of the Lost Meteorites of Antarctica project, which was funded in the UK by the Leverhulme Trust and supported by the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Manchester. These samples were collected as part of the project’s first field season in austral summer December 2018 - January 2019 by a two person field party consisting of Katherine Joy and Julie Baum. Found half buried within blue ice. Altitude 1164 m. Physical characteristics: Mass: 49.02 g. Pieces: 1. Dimensions: 5 × 3 × 3 cm. An elongate, light gray, whole stone with 70% black fusion crust exterior. Petrography: Equilibrated texture with poorly defined chondrules (up to 1 mm in diameter). Metal and sulfide distributed throughout. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: All analyses by EPMA. Olivine Fa25.9±0.3 (N=6), Pyroxene Fs21.6±0.4Wo1.5±0.2 (N=12). Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6). Specimens: 48.06 g type specimen (main mass) held at the NHM. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
