Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14113 (NWA 14113)

Algeria

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

History: Purchased from an Algerian meteorite dealer in March 2021. Reportedly found in Algeria in 2021.

Physical characteristics: Dark fusion-crusted exterior, broken surface reveals numerous small chondrules set in a dark gray matrix that makes up approximately 60% of this meteorite. Small CAIs are visible.

Petrography: (A. Ross and C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe and reflected light microscopy examination reveal a fine-grained matrix that gives low microprobe totals from the presence of hydrous phases. Apparent chondrule diameter 313±149 μm (n=14). Chromite, Ni-bearing troilite, pentlandite, calcite, diopside, and oxidized iron were detected.

Geochemistry: (A. Ross and C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa26.0±19.0, n=17; ferroan chondrule olivine Fa36.3±11.3, Fe/Mn=101±14, Cr2O3=0.36±0.15, n=12; low-Ca pyroxene Fs8.2±14.9Wo4.2±4.2, n=5; matrix (20 μm defocused microprobe beam) analytical totals of 76.9±1.3 wt% and FeO=31.5±5.6 wt%, n=3.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2). The low analytical totals in the matrix indicate the presence of hydrous phases.

Specimens: 20.1 g on deposit at UNM, Simon de Boer and Matthew Stream hold the main mass.
