Northwest Africa 14250 (NWA 14250)

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2)

Physical characteristics: Cut face reveals large chondrules and metal blebs set in a dark matrix. Several multi-mm dark clasts are visible.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Large chondrules, up to 4 mm in diameter (average apparent diameter 1590±860 µm, n=27) set in an abundant fine-grained, iron-rich matrix. Abundant metal is present in the form of blebs up to 1.2 mm in the matrix and in chondrules, as well as decorating chondrule rims. Sulfides are present in the matrix. Multi-mm xenolithic clasts of different carbonaceous chondrite material are present.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa1.7±0.1 (n=4). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs3.5±2.1Wo1.2±0.8 (n=7). Kamacite Fe 93.2 wt%, Ni 4.8 wt% (n=3). Defocused EPMA of the matrix: analytical total 81.5±2.9, FeO 33.0±2.0 wt% (n=3).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrites (CR2). CR group based on petrography and mineral chemistry. The low EPMA analytical total in the matrix indicate the presence of hydrous phases.

Specimens: Type specimen (20 g) at NHMD, 12 g at CEREGE, main mass with Martin Bizzarro
