Northwest Africa 14442 (NWA 14442)

Morocco

Purchased: 2019 Feb

Classification: Ureilite

History: Purchased by Sean Tutorow from a dealer in August 2019 in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: The type specimen has a rugged, patinaed dark brown surface. The interior has a gray to brown shade in some areas.

Petrography: (A. Bouvier, UBayr) The specimen has a fine-grained texture (grain size from 400 to 800 microns) including ~80 vol% olivine, 15 vol% pigeonite, 2 vol% as orthopyroxene, and remaining as dark interstitial material that consists of varying amounts of graphite, metal, Fe-rich metal (~5% Ni), and weathering products identified as iron oxides.

Geochemistry: Olivine cores Fa19.9±4.2 (n=21) and reduced rims Fa6.1±3.6 (n=13), with minor CaO=0.4±0.2 wt% and Cr2O3=0.7±0.2 wt% (n=34), pigeonite Fs16.2±3.2Wo11.0±2.2 with the following minor element compositions Cr2O3=1.2±0.2, Al2O3=0.8±0.6 and TiO2=0.06±0.06 (all in wt%) (n=8), and low-Ca pyroxene Fs5.6±0.6Wo1.1±0.1 (n=3).

Classification: Ureilite

Specimens: 14.7 g including a polished mount at UBayr. S. Tutorow holds the main mass.
