Northwest Africa 14443 (NWA 14443)


Purchased: 2019 Aug

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated)

History: Purchased by Sean Tutorow from a dealer in August 2019 in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: The type specimen has a rugged surface and lacks fusion crust. The interior has a dominant light gray to light brown shade, and present some veins filled with weathering products.

Petrography: (A. Bouvier, UBayr) The stone has a fine-grained, ophitic, and unbrecciated texture. It is composed predominantly of exsolved pigeonite (100-200 μm in size low-Ca pyroxene and up to 5 μm high-Ca pyroxene exsolution lamellae) and calcic plagioclase (~100-200 μm in size), and remaining as minor minerals such as silica polymorph, chromite, troilite, and rarer metal (partially oxidised). Irregular fracturing and offset of exsolution lamellae in pyroxenes indicate together some minor mechanical deformation by shock.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene pigeonite Fs59.3±1.4Wo2.7±0.2, Fe/Mn=31±2 (n=33) and high-Ca pyroxene lamellae Fs25.8±0.5Wo43.4±0.5 and Fe/Mn=30±3 (n=11), Plagioclase An88.3±1.1Or0.2±0.1 (n=18).

Classification: Basaltic, unbrecciated eucrite

Specimens: 28.9 g including a thin section and polished mount at UBayr. S. Tutorow holds the main mass.
