Northwest Africa 14357 (NWA 14357)

Morocco

Purchased: 2020 Jun

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3)

History: A small single stone weighing 24 g was purchased by Salaheddin Samrani at Erfoud in June 2020

Physical characteristics: The main mass is almost completely covered by black fusion crust.

Petrography: (V. Moggi Cecchi, L. Fabrizi, G. Pratesi, UniFi): The thin section shows a marked chondritic texture, with easily discernible chondrules of various types (PP, PO, RP and BO) set in a fine-grained matrix. Olivine is slightly inhomogeneous while orthopyroxene is rather inhomogeneous. Iron oxides, Fe-Ni alloys and troilite are the main opaque phases and can be found scattered in the matrix as individual grains in the matrix or rimming chondrules

Geochemistry: EMP (V. Moggi Cecchi, L. Fabrizi, G. Pratesi, UniFi): Olivine in chondrules and matrix Fa23.4±1.8 (Fa PMD = 8.5 %, Fe/Mn = 46; n=15); low-Ca pyroxene in both chondrules and matrix (Fs13.0±4.9En786.1±5.0Wo0.9±0.3; Fe/Mn = 29; n=33);

Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (L3); S2; W2.

Specimens: The main mass, weighing 20 g, is owned by Salaheddin Samrani; the type specimen, weighing 4.8 g, and one thin section are on deposit at MSN-FI (Inventory # I-3663).
