Northwest Africa 14471 (NWA 14471)

Purchased: 2021 Sept

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in September, 2021.

Physical characteristics: Two light grayish fragments partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Achondritic breccia composed of up to 5 mm sized basaltic and rare black impact melt rock clasts set in fine-grained related matrix. Basaltic clasts show intersertal textures with abundant domains of recrystallized mesostasis. Main minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases are silica, chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. No metallic iron was detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs50.7±0.7Wo2.0±0.6 (Fs49.4-51.5Wo1.5-3.3, n=7, FeO/MnO=32-34); Ca-pyroxene: Fs21.1±0.5Wo43.9±0.6 (Fs20.4-21.9Wo43.1-44.7, n=7, FeO/MnO=31-36); calcic plagioclase: An88.8±0.6 (An88.0-89.6, n=7)
