Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14487 (NWA 14487) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Jun Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated) History: Purchased by Eric Twelker in June 2021 from a dealer in Agadir, Morocco. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed predominantly of angular mineral debris from eucrite lithologies accompanied by sparse microgabbroic and fine-grained lithic eucrite clasts in a fine grained matrix. The fine grained lithic eucrite clasts have intergranular textures but range in grainsize from ~100 µm to ~200 µm, and some are plagioclase-phyric. Minerals are exsolved pigeonite, calcic plagioclase, silica polymorph, ilmenite, baddeleyite, troilite and Ni-poor Fe metal. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene hosts (Fs65.2-65.9Wo1.7-2.3, FeO/MnO = 32-34, N = 3), augite exsolution lamellae (Fs29.2-33.9Wo42.1-38.6, FeO/MnO = 31-33, N = 4), plagioclase (An88.1-90.2Or0.4-0.3, N = 4). Classification: Eucrite (breccia). Specimens: 23.4 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Twelker. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
