Northwest Africa 14491 (NWA 14491)

Purchased: 2019 Jun

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang in June 2019 from a dealer in Guelmim, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) The sample is composed of gabbroic eucrite clasts within a melt-textured matrix. The clasts contain exsolved low-Ca pyroxene and calcic plagioclase with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite, Ti-chromite and troilite. The matrix contains the same mineral phases, with pyroxene and plagioclase as bladed grains in parallel intergrowth.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (Fs59.9-61.1Wo4.1-4.8, FeO/MnO = 32-33, N = 2), pigeonite (Fs58.7-58.8Wo6.7-7.7, FeO/MnO = 32, N = 2), augite (Fs29.1-32.1Wo41.8-39.6, FeO/MnO = 34-36, N = 2), fayalite (Fa75.0, FeO/MnO = 45), plagioclase (An89.8-92.7Or0.3-0.5, N = 3).
