Hutchison Icefield 18027 (HUT 18027) 81°27.09583’S, 26°15.40333’W Antarctica Find: 2019 Jan 17 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H6) History: The meteorite was recovered as part of the Lost Meteorites of Antarctica project. which was funded in the UK by the Leverhulme Trust and supported by the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Manchester. These samples were collected as part of the project’s first field season in austral summer December 2018 - January 2019 by a two person field party consisting of Katherine Joy and Julie Baum. Found on firn. Altitude 1106 m. Physical characteristics: Mass: 0.79 g. Pieces: 1. Dimensions: 1 × 1 × 0.5 cm. An irregular. part stone with 30% black fusion crust. black exterior and rusty brown interior. Petrography: Equilibrated texture with some clearly delineated relict chondrules (up to 1 mm). Metal and sulfide grains occur as grains up to 0.5 mm throughout. and as small blebs in relict chondrules. Plagioclase grains up to 0.2 mm. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: All analyses by EPMA. Olivine Fa19.1±0.2 (N=10). Pyroxene Fs16.6±0.1Wo1.5±0.2 (N=11). Plagioclase An12.0±0.2Ab83.0±0.2Or5.1±0.1 (N=2). Classification: H6 Specimens: 0.75 g type specimen (main mass) held at the NHM London. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
