Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14380 (NWA 14380) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 May Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3.15) History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang in May 2021 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed, closely-packed, unequilibrated glass-bearing chondrules (apparent diameter 780 ± 420 µm, N = 24) are set in a fine grained matrix containing altered kamacite, taenite, troilite and a secondary iron oxide phase compositionally like Ti-poor magnetite. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa23.2±15.2, range Fa1.4-41.0, N = 6; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.02-0.69 wt.%, mean 0.16±0.18 wt%, N = 30), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs14.9±11.6Wo1.3±1.8, range Fs2.9-30.4Wo0.2-3.9, N = 4), augite (Fs9.0±0.6Wo40.9±3.0, range Fs8.5-9.4Wo38.8-43.0, N = 2). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.74. Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3.15). Subtype based on the mean and standard deviation for Cr2O3 contents in ferroan olivine (Grossman and Brearley, 2005). Specimens: 22.3 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
