Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14406 (NWA 14406)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Aug

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Ouarzazate, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Two dark brownish to black fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a dark brownish interior and is composed of sharply defined separated chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 800 µm) and sparse CAIs in a matrix dominated by Ni-bearing ferroan olivine. Olivines and low-Ca pyroxene in chondrules often show strong compositional zoning. More minor phases include intermediate plagioclase, Ca-pyroxene, troilite, and pentlandite; metal was no detected. Cr-bearing magnetite is abundant. The meteorite is strongly altered and contains secondary calcite.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa25.0±8.8 (Fa6.1-30.9, NiO=0.43±0.14 wt%, n=12); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs12.3±10.4Wo0.9±0.2 (Fs2.1-26.8Wo0.6-1.3, n=9); Ca-pyroxene: Fs12.1±1.2Wo37.2±2.7 (Fs10.9-13.2Wo34.5-39.9, n=2); feldspar: An15.7-18.9Ab76.4-79.7Or4.3-5.4, n=4; magnetite contains 3.13±0.03 wt% Cr2O3, n=3
