Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14505 (NWA 14505)

Morocco

Purchased: 2005

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

History: Sample was purchased from A. Aaronson at the Denver Show in 2005who acquired it from Morocco. Sample is catalogued at the Royal Ontario Museum as M59753

Physical characteristics: Large single specimen displaying moderate desert polish modification to fusion crust (2/3 of its surface) and weathered broken surfaces. Chondrules and CAIs readily visible. Several subparallel weathered 1 mm fractures pass through the meteorite.

Petrography: Cut endpiece surfaces and a thin section show abundant, well defined chondrules (40 vol%) with average diameter 0.72 mm (n = 28), set in a dark-gray matrix (55 vol%) which also contains CAIs (<5 vol%) and 5 vol% AOAs. Porphyritic (PO, POP) chondrules are most common. Olivine in chondrules exhibits sharp extinction. In BSE images, olivine commonly shows Fe-Mg zoning. Metal is absent, and magnetite occurs as subhedral inclusions in chondrules and as rounded clusters (up to 30 micrometres) of finer grains in the matrix.

Geochemistry: EPMA: Olivine: Fa25.04±18.14 (n=30), with chondrule olivine: Fa8.20±10.90 (n=11); Ca-poor pyroxene: Fs1.60±0.95 En97.55±0.89 Wo0.85±0.21 (n=17); Ca-rich pyroxene: Fs0.94±0.37En58.08±4.26Wo40.98±4.32 (n=12). Magnetite compositions (wt%): Cr2O3=1.33±0.33, TiO2=0.03±0.01, NiO=0.07±0.04, Al2O3=1.06±0.27 (n=22)

Classification: CV3 (S1) Moderately Weathered: Chondrule size, abundance, chondrule olivine compositions with Fa<15, and magnetite compositions indicate that this meteorite is a CV3 and not CK.
