Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14508 (NWA 14508)

Morocco

Purchased: 2012

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Sample was purchased from A. Aaronson in Tucson, USA in 2012 who acquired it from Morocco. Sample is catalogued at the Royal Ontario Museum as M58209

Physical characteristics: Fist-sized rounded pyramidal individual showing 70% fusion crust on three faces and one broken surface face, all with well-developed desert polish. Broken surface suggests presence of chondrules. Sample is somewhat attracted to a magnet.

Petrography: Cut faces reveal a grey mottled interior bearing small chondrules and a few vol% metal in sub-mm grains. In petrographic thin section, the bulk rock consists mostly of small chondrules (310 ± 161 µm; n=30), chondrule fragments, subhedral olivine grains and abundant CAIs (5 vol%). All inclusions are enclosed in dark fine-grained rims up to 20 µm thick. Matrix component is <30 vol%. Olivine in chondrules and as individual grains exhibits sharp to undulatory extinction. Magnetite grains absent. Troilite is abundant as small (10 to 30 µm) subrounded grains typically as inclusions in chondrule olivine.

Geochemistry: EPMA Olivine: 27.45±15.05 (n=31). Ca-poor pyroxene: Fs3.21±1.99En95.17±2.81Wo1.62±1.36 (n=16); Ca-rich pyroxene: Fs1.99±1.55En55.79±4.62Wo42.32±5.54 (n=13). Oxygen Isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): 3 acid-washed fragments analyzed by laser fluorination gave: δ18O=-2.175, -1.050, -2.968; δ17O=-6.026, -5.116, -6.871; δ17O=-4.878, -4.562, -5.303 (all per mil).

Classification: CO3 (S1) moderate weathering: Small chondrule size, matrix-poor, fragments and olivine grains enclosed by dark fine grained rims, presence of abundant sulfide, O-isotopes all consistent with CO classification.
