Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14511 (NWA 14511)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 1 April 2021

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: An importer of Moroccan meteorites brought a collection of stones to Robert Verish for classification.

Physical characteristics: A single thumb-sized pebble, more gray than brown, 50% covered with a smooth, relict fusion-crust (also more gray than brown). A cut surface revealed minute metal-grains and small chondrules, and many were more darker than the gray matrix.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is a chondrite composed of small chondrules (~230±100 µm, predominantly POP-textured), refractory inclusions (both CAIs and AOAs), and isolated mineral fragments set within a dark, fine-grained matrix (~50 vol. %).

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa29.5±12.1, range Fa4.2-40.4, n=28), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs11.3±5.3Wo2.9±1.7, range Fs2.2-27.6Wo0.9-5.7, n=19).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

Specimens: 10.5 grams at UCLA, main mass with Verish
