Mayak 53°33.88’N, 65°32.38’E Kustanay, Kazakhstan Find: 2013 May 20 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5) History: Unusually heavy stone was found by Mr. Sergey Mazunin in May 20 (2013) 5 km NNE from the town of Mayak (formerly called Gulyaevka), Kazakhstan. The stone was broken into three parts. Mr. Mazunin took the fragment of 944 g weight and later lost it in his home garden. The fragments of 2937 and 1419 g were taken by two local residents. One of them, Mr. Ruslan Karimov, took the piece of 1419 g weight. In 2018 his son, Mr. Yuriy Karimov identified the stone as meteorite and send the both pieces of meteorite to DMUH for investigation. Physical characteristics: Single stone of 5.3 kg of total weight has brown- to dark brown surface with regmaglypts and partially preserved fusion crust. Petrography: the meteorite has brecciated texture and composes of chondrules, their fragments, mineral grains and melt rock fragments embedded into a fine- to medium-grained recrystallized matrix. The chondrules of 460±246 µm in diameter are poorly outlined and mostly presented by BO, BOP, PO, POP, RO and minor CC types. The main phases are olivine, pyroxene, Fe,Ni iron, minor feldspar, troilite, accessory chromite and Fe,Ni hydroxides. Olivine has weak undulatory extinction. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Oivine Fa18.9±0.4 (N=13); Pyroxene Fs16.5±0.3Wo1.4±0.5 (N=10). Classification: Based on texture and mineral compositions the meteorite is classified as H5 ordinary chondrite (S2; W1) Specimens: Type specimens of 714.4 g (cut piece) and 6.1 g (fragments), and thin polished section are on deposit in Vernad. DMUH holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
