Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14489 (NWA 14489)

Mali

Purchased: 2021 Jun

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Craig Zlimen in June 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Small well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 180±80 µm, N = 24), angular olivine grains and very fine grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~40 vol. %, deep reddish-brown in thin section) containing troilite, kamacite, plagioclase and taenite. Minerals in CAI include Al-Ti-diopside, gehlenite, V-bearing spinel, perovskite, hibonite and ilmenite (associated with perovskite).

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa32.7±24.8, range Fa0.9-64.1, N = 5; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.06-0.21 wt.%, mean 0.14±0.06 wt%, N = 6), matrix olivine (Fa83.0), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs2.7±1.0Wo2.0±2.4, range Fs1.6-3.5Wo0.6-4.8, N = 3), pigeonite (Fs25.7Wo6.7), subcalcic augite (Fs19.1Wo36.0), Al-Ti-diopside (Fs2.8Wo40.1, Al2O3 8.3 wt.%, TiO2 1.2 wt.%), plagioclase (An40.1Or0.0; An82.7Or0.0; N = 2).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 29.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. C. Zlimen.
