Northwest Africa 14554 (NWA 14554)

Morocco

Purchased: 2012

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4)

History: Sample was purchased in 2012 from Adam Aaronson at the Tucson mineral show who acquired it from Morocco. Sample is catalogued at the Royal Ontario Museum as M58501.

Physical characteristics: Individual mostly covered by fusion crust with minor broken surfaces and moderately-developed desert polish.

Petrography: Cut surfaces show a dark grey matrix containing somewhat flattened chondrules that define a foliation fabric in the rock. Metal and sulfide blebs of typically 0.4 mm size are disseminated throughout, also defining the foliation. Some metal occurs in short veins. The matrix appears to be shock blackened. In thin section, ovoid chondrules ranging in size up to 1.4 mm length, chondrule fragments and individual olivine and pyroxene grains are set in a dark matrix. Chondules are are well-distinguishable and chondrules and fragments typically have a dark fine-grained rim. Olivine and pyroxene in chondrules and matrix exhibits undulatory to mosaic extinction and has planar fractures. Metal occurs as elongate irregular blebs length displaying embayment texture with the silicates. Accessory sulfides typically have a spongy appearance and are associated with Fe-oxides.

Geochemistry: EPMA: Olivine Fa19.05±0.50 (n=28); Ca-poor pyroxene Fs16.59±0.27Wo1.26±0.07 (n=21); Ca-rich pyroxene Wo45.92±0.38Fs6.32±0.61 (n=7).
