Northwest Africa 14547 (NWA 14547) Morocco Purchased: 2021 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3) History: An 84.5 g sample was found prior to 2021 in northwest Africa, and was purchased and donated to App by Steve Arnold in 2020. Physical characteristics: The stone is irregularly shaped, brown, and displays no fusion crust. Chondrules are visible without a hand lens. Mineralized deposits of calcite are present on the exterior. Petrography: (G. Margulies, App): The sample has a chondritic texture composed of a host of poorly equilibrated chondrules and a single equilibrated clast. The host contains well-defined chondrules within a partially recrystallized matrix. Poikilitic, porphyritic and barred olivine chondrules have an average diameter of 651 µm (n=119). Rare FeNi and FeS are present throughout the sample. Additional minerals observed include apatite, chromite, calcite, and troilite. Geochemistry: (G. Margulies, App): Olivine (Fa25.3±3.3, Fe/Mn=48.4±3.8, n=20); low ca pyroxene (Fs 14.5±6.5Wo0.9±1.1, Fe/Mn=26.2±7.4, n=13); pigeonite (Fs14.0-21.6Wo12.6-18.5, Fe/Mn=25.1-25.8, n=2). Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3, C-S2, W5). Poorly equilibrated Fa and Fs and low magnetic susceptibility suggest LL3 Specimens: App holds the 81.95 main mass and a polished thin section. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
