Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14548 (NWA 14548) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3) History: Three pieces, weighing a total of 150g were found by a nomad in a place in northwest Africa of unknown coordinates. The meteorite was eventually purchased by Carlos Mun_ecas from a dealer of Tindouf, Algeria. Physical characteristics: A dark brown patina covers about 80% of the stone. Weathering has removed fusion crust on two sides, revealing a lightly oxidized surface beneath. The shape is thin and oblong. Petrography: Description and classification (H. Brown, App) Sample shows abundant chondrules with an average diameter of 709 μm (142-1915 μm, n=81). Metal has been altered to weathering products. Additional minerals are: phosphates, troilite, chromite and secondary calcite. Geochemistry: (H. Brown, App) Olivine (Fa18.8±11.5, Fe/Mn=51.2±13.4, Cr2O3 in ferroan chondrules= 0.1±0.1, n=22); low-Ca pyroxene (Fs11.5±10.5Wo0.7±0.7, Fe/Mn=25.2±18.7 n=14); pigeonite (Fs12.8Wo8.3, n=1). Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (LL3 S1 W3.6) Low magnetic susceptibility suggests sample is LL. Classified as a Type 3, given the low average and high standard deviation of Fa and Fs. Specimens: Carlos Muñecas (Expometeoritos) and Adrian Contreras hold the 63 g main mass. An epoxy mount, a polished thin section and a cut individual weighing 22.40 g are on deposit at App. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
