Northwest Africa 14605 (NWA 14605)

Morocco

Purchased: 2011

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4-6)

History: The meteorite was purchased in Tucson, Arizona in 2011 by D. Gregory from A. Aaronson. Specimen was investigated at UWO under the name DG-14-2011.

Physical characteristics: Rounded individual with 60% fusion crust and pitted broken surfaces, all with moderate desert varnish and pink soiling. There are some patches of FeO oxidation on the surface as well. Physical properties (P. Cassidy, UWO): Grain density measured by He-pycnometry on a 57.22 g piece is 3.472±0.005 g/cm3. Magnetic susceptibility on the same piece is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg)=4.77.

Petrography: In cut surface, the meteorite is a grey breccia with subangular clasts up to 1.4 cm size of differing petrologic grade. Metal is apparent as mm grains, with minor local oxidation. In thin section, chondrules and chondrule fragments are well defined in a recrystallized matrix. Olivine grains show many planar fractures with weak mosaicism. A prominent 1.2 cm clast as well as smaller clasts in the thin section are all higher petrographic grade, containing chondrules that are barely discernable. In plane-polarized light, FeO staining can be seen throughout the sample, however, in reflected light, the Ni-Fe metal has not been significantly replaced by FeO.

Geochemistry: EPMA: olivine Fa24.12±0.99 (n=17); Ca-poor pyroxene Fs19.56±0.83Wo1.19±0.44 (n=10)

Classification: Ordinary chondrite: L4-6 breccia (S4) W1. Abundant fragmented chondrules and presence of clasts with higher petrographic grade indicate that this meteorite is a breccia.
