Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 14596 (NWA 14596) Morocco Purchased: 2014 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) History: Sample was purchased from A. Aaronson at the Tucson Mineral Show in 2014 who acquired it from Morocco. Sample is catalogued at the Royal Ontario Museum as M58926. Physical characteristics: Small, flat specimen displaying 60% fusion crust cover, with one weathered, broken surface around much of the edge between fusion crust surfaces. CAIs are visible through fusion crust. Desert polish is moderately developed. Magnetic susceptibilty on a 9.82 g fragment is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.71. Petrography: Cut surfaces show a gray matrix bearing large chondrules and some CAIs. In thin section, chondrules (15 vol%), calcium aluminum-rich inclusions (15 vol%) and amoeboid olivine aggregates (5 vol%) all bear dark fine-grained rims, well spaced in a dark fragmental matrix. Chondrules of dominantly POP, BO types average 910±424 µm (n=24) diameter, and typically have igneous rims. Several round dark inclusions ranging from 150 to 800 µm are also present, bearing fine magnetite-rich rims. Olivine in chondrules and martix shows sharp to undulatory extinction. Olivine in the matrix appears pitted with cloudy cores. No metal is present. Spongy textured magnetite occurs as small grains, isolated spherical aggregates in matrix and as grains in rim material and inclusions within chondrules. Troilite appears on some chondrule rims and as blocky isolated grains in the matrix. In BSE images, chondrule olivine grains are typically zoned to Fe-rich rims. Geochemistry: EPMA: Olivine Fa20.76±11.91 (n=32); Chondrule olivine Fa17.95±12.06 (n=25); Matrix olivine Fa30.81±0.36 (n=7). Ca-poor pyroxene: Fs6.95±8.79En92.07±8.55Wo0.98±0.38 (n=14); Ca-rich pyroxene: Fs5.76±4.52En50.95±11.57Wo43.30±7.19 (n=15). Magnetite compositions: Cr2O3=2.50±0.22, TiO2=0.60±0.11, NiO=0.35±0.04, Al2O3=2.56±0.21 (n=20). Classification: CK3 (S2) Moderately Weathered. Chondrule olivine variability and matrix olivine equilibration as well as magnetite compositions all fit criteria of CK. Cr2O3 content between 2 and 3 wt% indicates CK3.
