Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14455 (NWA 14455)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018 Aug

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R4)

History: Purchased by Ziyao Wang in August 2018 from a dealer in Guelmim, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed relatively small, equilibrated chondrules plus lithic chondrite clasts are set in a fine grained matrix (~30 vol.%, dark orange-brown in thin section) containing altered sulfides (troilite and pentlandite), chromite (with variable Ti content), ilmenite, secondary barite and Fe oxides. Several micron-sized inclusions of an Ir-Pt arsenide phase (probably sperrylite) were observed within pentlandite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa39.4±0.8, range Fa38.0-40.0, N = 5), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs19.0±8.3Wo0.7±0.5, range Fs10.9-27.8Wo0.2-1.4, N = 4), ferroan pigeonite (Fs60.7±6.1Wo5.5±0.7, range Fs56.4-65.0Wo5.0-6.0, N = 2), augite (Fs24.6±12.9Wo42.3±3.3, range Fs10.2-35.2Wo46.1-40.0, N = 3), plagioclase (Ab79.1An19.6Or1.3).

Classification: R4 chondrite.

Specimens: 22.8 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with WangZ.
