Writeup from MB 111:

Calama 199        22°19’02"S, 68°41’50"W

Antofagasta, Chile

Find: 2020

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: The stone was found by Dario Ruiz in the Atacama desert in 2021

Physical characteristics: Black stone. Cut face reveals a dark-gray interior with mm-sized chondrules and CAIs set in an abundant brown matrix.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrite with mm-sized chnodrules and mm-sized CAIs set in about 50 vol% of recrystallized matrix. Olivine is the dominant mineral. Olivine in chondrules is zoned with Fe-poor cores. Plagioclase in the matrix are up to 100 µm. Magnetite is abundant. Rare sulfides, to 2 µm, associated with magnetite.

Geochemistry: Matrix olivine Fa31.9±1.3, NiO 0.31±0.13 wt% (n=5). Chondrule olivine Fa22.4±9.0, range Fa5.3-32.0, Fa PMD 36%, NiO 0.21±0.14 wt% (n=11). Ca-pyroxene Fs1.2±0.3Wo37.2±2.4 (n=3). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs4.2Wo3.2 (n=1). Plagioclase An19.7Ab74.9Or5.3 (n=1). Magnetite Cr2O3 content is 3.56±0.35 wt%.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3). CK group based on mineralogy, texture and Cr content of magnetite. Type 3 based on the unequilibrated chondrule olivine contrasting with the recrystallized matrix that has almost equilibrated olivine and contains plagioclase, as described in Torrano et al. (2020).

Specimens: Type specien at CEREGE. Main mass with Dario Ruiz.
