Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 14578 (NWA 14578) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: Ungrouped achondrite History: Purchased by Mark Lyon from a meteorite dealer and now owned by Frank Thompson and Kasper Dahl Finderup. Physical characteristics: Saw-cut slice surface reveals a polycrystalline aggregate of light green, dark gray and white grains up to 1 mm in size. Petrography: (A. Ross and C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe analysis and reflected light microscopy of a polished mount shows a texturally and compositionally equilibrated mosaic of major mineral phases diopside, forsterite, and plagioclase. Minor phases, Cr-troilite and Fe-metal (low-Ni) were also detected. Both forsterite and diopside are chromium-bearing. Geochemistry: (A. Ross, UNM) Forsterite Fa2.3±0.0, Cr2O3=0.37±0.01, Fe/Mn=26±2, n=2; diopside Fs0.9±0.0Wo45.8±0.1, Cr2O3=0.97±0.01, Fe/Mn=18±8, n=6; plagioclase An88.6±1.1Ab11.2±1.1, n=4. Classification: Achondrite-ung, very likely paired with NWA 7325. Specimens: 1.6 g on deposit at UNM. Frank Thompson and Kasper Dahl Finderup hold the main mass | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
