Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14670 (NWA 14670)

Morocco

Purchased: 2008

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H3)

History: Sample was purchased at the Tucson Mineral show in 2008 from A. Aaronson, who acquired it from Morocco. Sample is catalogued at the Royal Ontario Museum as M58500.

Physical characteristics: Thumb-sized friable individual with two fusion crust faces and slightly weathered broken surfaces containing metal and some chondrules. Physical properties: Magnetic susceptibilty of a 17.38 g specimen is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 5.08.

Petrography: Cut surfaces reveal a gray interior with abumdant mm-sized metal grains and aggregates. In thin section, a dark, slightly recrystallized matrix contains chondrules, chondrule fragments, individual grains and metal grains and metal-silicate aggregates, all bearing fine grained rims. Chondrule types are predominantly POP, PP and CC. Chondrule mesostasis is typically microscrystalline and dark. Pyroxene and olivine grains typically show sharp extinction. In BSE images, olivine shows zoning in PO and POP chondrules and some matrix grains.

Geochemistry: EPMA: olivine Fa20.04±6.00 (n=29); Ca-poor pyroxene Fs14.18±3.74, Wo1.30±0.98 (n=23); Ca-rich pyroxene Fs5.49±0.23Wo46.24±0.27 (n=3), one grain Fs14.25, Wo25.27.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite: H3 (S1) W1. Dark but slightly recrystallized matrix and chondrule mesostases, along with Fa and Fs variation in EPMA data suggest type 3. Abundance of metal and magnetic susceptibility indicate type H.

Specimens: Type specimen ROM; main mass DGregory
