Northwest Africa 14646 (NWA 14646)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: December, 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Fifteen light grayish fragments some of which almost completely covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia composed of coarse-grained basaltic regions dominated by up to 1 mm sized often lath-shaped plagioclase and compositionally zoned low-Ca pyroxene and more fine-grained regions with 20 to 200 mm sized exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include fayalite, silica, Ti-poor chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. No metallic iron detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to augite exsolution lamellae: Fs60.4±0.2Wo1.9±0.1 (Fs60.1-50.7Wo1.7-2.0, FeO/MnO=27-29, n=7); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs27.9±0.6Wo42.1±1.0 (Fs27.1-28.8Wo40.7-43.7, FeO/MnO=25-29, n=7); zoned low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs43.3±10.5Wo5.1±0.9 (Fs32.6-58.3Wo3.5-6.4, FeO/MnO=25-30, n=6); olivine: Fa82.2±0.2 (Fa82.0-82.5, FeO/MnO=37±1, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An85.9±5.6 (An79.4-92.0, n=7)
