Northwest Africa 14672 (NWA 14672)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2015

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

Petrography: This is an olivine-phyric shergottite with anhedral olivine phenocrysts, pigeonite, augite, and plagioclase.Minor minerals include a silica phase, merrillite, Ti magnetite and Fe sulfide. The meteorite contains fine vesicles (100-200 micrometers) and abundant mesostasis with two distinct textures, one with plagioclase bars and one with olivine dendrites. Shock evidence include the presence of maskelynite and the diverse textures of the fine-grained portions .

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: R. Hewins. Olivine has a composition of Fo53-15 (FeO/MnO 49.3). There is a continuum of pigeonite/subcacic augite/augite compositions: across a spread of Wo9-43 on the quadrilateral, En decreases from 53 to 15 while Fs increases from 22 to 61. Maskelynite composition is An59-68.

Classification: Martian (shegottite, olivine-phyric).

Specimens: type specimen 20 g at MNHNP. Main mass held anonymously.
