Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14688 (NWA 14688)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Nov

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL5)

History: According to the owner these stones were found in October 2021 by a group of Saharawi meteorite hunters about 100 km NW of Taoudenni, Mali.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Brecciated ordinary chondrite, consisting of dark mm- to cm-sized chondritic clasts, embedded in a yellowish matrix of fine-grained related debris. The clasts show a recrystallized texture with barely visible chondrules of various textural types. Secondary feldspar grains are mostly <50 µm. Accessory phases are Fe-Ni metal (mostly terrestrially altered) and troilite, mostly residing outside of chondrules.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: The mean olivine composition is Fa30.2±0.4 (Fa29.8-30.9; n=12) and the mean low-Ca pyroxene composition is Fs24.4±0.3 Wo1.5±0.3 (Fs24.0-24.8Wo1.1-2.0; n=12).

Classification: LL chondrite based on mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 5, based on the equilibrated state of olivine and pyroxene and grain size of secondary plagioclase.

Specimens: The largest stone has a weight of 354 g.
