Northwest Africa 14545 (NWA 14545)

Purchased: 2021 May

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL7)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Brecciated ordinary chondrite with low amounts of metal and a distinct recrystallization texture. Sizes of secondary feldspar grains >50 µm (several with sizes >100 µm).

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: The mean olivine composition is Fa30.8±0.3 (Fa30.3-31.2; n=12). The mean low-Ca pyroxene composition is Fs25.2±0.3Wo2.2±0.4 (Fs24.7-25.7Wo1.7-2.8; n=10); Mean CaO concentration in low-Ca pyroxene (wt%): 1.1±0.2 (0.9-1.4).

Classification: LL chondrite based on mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 7 based on the equilibrated state of olivine and pyroxene, and the high CaO concentration in low-Ca pyroxene. The transition from type 6 to 7 is a mean CaO concentration of 1.0 wt% (Tait et al. 2014; GCA 134:175).
