Northwest Africa 14585 (NWA 14585) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Jun Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite) History: Purchased by Bala Adi from several Algerian dealers and acquired by Jason Whitcomb in June 2021. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Complex metal-bearing breccia consisting of silicate clasts of varying size set in a much finer grained, partly vesicular matrix containing kamacite, troilite and ilmenite (all three as composite grains). Silicate grains include diogenitic orthopyroxene, diogenitic olivine, eucritic pigeonite, bytownitic plagioclase and anorthite. The proportions of diogenitic and eucritic material are difficult to estimate accurately, but certainly exceed 10 vol.% each. Silica polymorph, augite, chromite and Fe metal were not observed in the studied slice, but a single 250 µm zoned glass sphere with diogenitic orthopyroxene-like core and pigeonite-like rim was found. Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene ( Fs27.4Wo1.0; FeO/MnO = 25-37; N = 2), pigeonite (Fs32.2-35.9Wo8.4-15.5, FeO/MnO = 28-34, N = 4), ferroan pigeonite rim (Fs48.4Wo6.2, FeO/MnO = 28), olivine (Fa41.6-52.5, FeO/MnO = 49-56, N = 3), olivine inclusion in diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fa31.2, FeO/MnO = 45), plagioclase (An82.3-92.5Or0.7-0.2, N = 3), glass sphere core (Fs17.8Wo2.3, FeO/MnO = 37, Al2O3 2.0 wt.%).
