Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14641 (NWA 14641)

Howardite, (Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Sept

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in September, 2021.

Physical characteristics: Light grayish rock with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a clast-rich polymict breccia with a great diversity of mineral and lithic fragments set into a fine-grained clastic groundmass. Lithic fragments are up to 2 cm sized basaltic and black impact melt clasts. Predominant minerals are Fe-rich low-Ca pyroxenes with augite exsolution lamellae, diogenetic low-Ca pyroxene (about 30 vol%), ferroan unexsolved low-Ca pyroxene, zoned low-Ca pyroxene, olivine, and calcic plagioclase all with variable grain sizes. Diogenetic low-Ca pyroxenes are up to 2 mm in size. Minor phases include silica, Ti-poor chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. Metallic iron was not detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to augite exsolution lamellae: Fs55.0±0.4Wo2.3±0.6 (Fs54.0-55.5Wo1.8-3.6, FeO/MnO=27-30, n=7); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs26.5±0.3Wo37.9±0.4 (Fs25.9-27.0Wo37.4-38.6, FeO/MnO=25-30, n=7); diogenetic low-Ca pyroxene: Fs30.2±0.4Wo2.7±0.6 (Fs29.6-30.8Wo1.8-3.6, FeO/MnO=29-30, n=7); ferroan low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs42.1±0.2Wo1.9±0.1 (Fs41.7-42.4Wo1.8-2.0, FeO/MnO=26-28, n=7); zoned low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs25.6±2.5Wo1.8±0.1 (Fs22.8-29.2Wo1.7-1.8, FeO/MnO=27-29, n=7); olivine: Fa42.8±0.2 (Fa42.6-43.1, FeO/MnO=46±1, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An90.5±0.3 (An90.1-90.8, n=4)
