Northwest Africa 14687 (NWA 14687) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2020 Classification: Lunar meteorite (frag. breccia) History: Purchased September, 2021 by Edwin Thompson from anonymous dealer in September of 2021. Physical characteristics: A single grey-black stone. Saw cut fragments taken from the main mass reveal an interior with many rounded and irregular shaped clasts. Petrography: (A. Ross, UNM; D. Dickens, NMMS; C. Agee, UNM) This meteorite is a clast-rich polymict breccia with diverse lithic fragments embedded in a fine-grained moderately vesiculated groundmass. Fragmental clasts sizes range from <0.1-10 mm and are primarily basaltic. Kamacite and ilmenite are present. This meteorite is shocked with some impact melt textures present. Geochemistry: (A. Ross, UNM) Olivine Fa24.9±5.1, Fe/Mn=90±7, n=10; pigeonite Fs20.5±1.6Wo11.0±3.8, Fe/Mn=50±4, n=9; high Ca pyroxene Fs6.1Wo42.0, Fe/Mn=39 n=1; plagioclase An96.5±0.7Ab3.3±0.7Or0.2±0.1, n=6 Classification: Lunar Fragmental Breccia Specimens: 20.3 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Bryce Rhodes holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
