Writeup from MB 111:

El Médano 497 (EM 497)        24°44.344’S, 70°21.409’W

Antofagasta, Chile

Find: 2019 Nov 22

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4)

History: While searching for meteorites, Vincent Stelluti recovered this stone on a slope of about 4% and composed of gravel, stones and sand. The stone was deposited on the surface of the ground

Physical characteristics: A 33.8 g brown stone has roughly prismatic shape; the three sides exposed to the wind are smooth and the side touching the ground is rough. One cannot distinguish any fusion crust on its surface. Physical properties: Bulk density: 3.44±0.03 g/cm3; magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 5.01.

Petrography: Chondrules are well defined, set in a finely recrystallized matrix. Chondrule mesostases are finely recystallized. Silicates show pervasive Fe-staining. Chondrules and individual grains in the matrix have fine-grained rims of matrix material. Olivine displays straight to undulatory extinction. Metal is abundant in the section, occuring primarily in the matrix as isolated sub-mm grains.

Geochemistry: EPMA: olivine Fa19.14±0.21 (n=11); Ca-poor pyroxene Fs17.00±0.62Wo1.32±0.26 (n=11)

Classification: Ordinary chondrite: H4 (S1) W2

Specimens: Type specimen: UWO; Main mass V. Stelluti
