Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 14728 (NWA 14728) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Nov Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4) History: B. Kormos purchased the stone from a Moroccan dealer in November 2021. Physical characteristics: (D. Rezes, CSFK) Originally an individual angular (length: 8 cm, width: 4 cm) dark brown stone (116 g) without fusion crust. Several well-defined chondrules are observable on the broken surface of the stone. Cut surface reveals numerous pores and thin cracks. Petrography: (D. Rezes, CSFK) The stone has chondritic texture with well-defined chondrules. The chondrules are relatively small with an average diameter of 487 µm (N=46). The chondrules contain devitrified glass. The texture is slightly porous with pore diameters up to 250 µm. FeNi metal and troilite show heavy oxidation without the alteration of mafic silicates. Olivine crystals show relatively sharp optical extinction, however they contain irregular fractures. Planar fractures are rare. Chromite, troilite, and apatite were identified as accessory minerals. Geochemistry: (D. Rezes, CSFK) Olivine Fa19.28±0.24 (range Fa18.75-19.72; PMD Fa=1.27%), Fe/Mn=40.7±5.5, N=24; low-Ca pyroxene (enstatite) Fs17.71±1.30Wo1.00±1.08 (range Fs15.63-19.36Wo0.19-3.29; PMD Fs=7.37%), Fe/Mn=25.2±3.2, N=8; augite crystallites Fs11.53±1.17Wo33.23±5.83, Fe/Mn=18.2±3.6, N=2. Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4), shock stage S2, weathering grade W3. Specimens: 25 g on deposit at CSFK, B. Kormos holds the main mass and one polished thin section. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
