Northwest Africa 14773 (NWA 14773)

Purchased: 2021 Jun

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4)

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in June 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Extensively weathered specimen. Almost all primary metal has been altered to Fe hydroxides leaving only tiny remnants of fresh taenite and kamacite. Well-formed equilibrated chondrules containing either devitrified glass or in some cases plagioclase are evident. Troilite and chromite are present in the relatively coarse grained matrix, but no phosphates or augite were identified. The extensive weathering makes it impossible to ascertain whether fine grained plagioclase occurs in the matrix.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa19.0±0.2, range Fa18.7-19.2, N = 7), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs16.5±0.1Wo1.4±0.1, range Fs16.4-16.7Wo1.2-1.5, N = 7).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4). Petrologic type 4 is inferred for this specimen based on the well-defined spherical form of the chondrules, their abundance and the presence within them of devitrified glass.

Specimens: 21.85 g including one polished thick section at PSF; remainder with Mr. J. Whitcomb.
