Niger

Find: 2017 Sep

Classification: Iron meteorite (IIIAB)

History: The meteorite was found in Niger, north of Agadez in the Tenere desert in September 2017.

Petrography: (Jérôme Gattacceca, Clara Maurel, CEREGE) Iron meteorite with medium octahedrite structure showing some kamacite grain growth. Kamacite bandwith is 800 µm. Kamacite is in the epsilon-structure. Kamacite bands are separated by plessitic domains. Multiple sets of Neumann bands are visible. Schreibersite is found as mm-sized elongated grains.

Geochemistry: XRF measurement of a polished cut surface gives Ni 9.70 wt% and Co 0.53 wt%. (V. Debaille, ULB) Composition of the metal (ICP-MS) is Co=0.5 wt%, Cr was below detection limit, Cu=106 ppm, Ga=20 ppm, As=12 ppm, Mo=7.6 ppm, Pd=5.1 ppm, Ir=0.08 ppm, Au=1.3 ppm. Ge was not measured.
