Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14710 (NWA 14710)

Morocco

Purchased: 2017

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Sample was purchased at Tucson Mineral show in 2017 from Said Haddany, who acquired it from Morocco. Sample is catalogued at ROM as M59719.

Physical characteristics: Rounded, smooth individual with a mature desert polish, lacking fusion crust. Weathered surfaces show abundant chondrules and chondrule sockets. Physical properties: Magnetic susceptibilty of a 99.79 g specimen is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.10.

Petrography: Cut faces (8 cm2) show well-delineated chondrules with fine grained rims. Very little metal present. In polished thin section, a dark matrix (25 vol%) contains abundant chondrules and chondrule fragments. Chondrules are mostly of POP, PO, BO and RP types, and have fine grained rims. Chondrule mesostasis is typically microcrystalline and dark. Olivine shows mostly sharp extinction with few grains showing undulatory extinction. In BSE images, chondrule olivine and pyroxene grains are typically zoned. Metal grains typically occur as sparse <10 µm inclusions in porphyritic chondrules, and as rare aggregates in the matrix.

Geochemistry: EPMA: olivine Fa24.96±17.16 (n=27); Ca-poor pyroxene Fs11.97±8.74, Wo0.68±0.46 (n=20); Ca-rich pyroxene Fs10.97±6.46, Wo35.86±11.42 (n=13). Cr2O3 wt% in ferroan olivine is 0.09±0.06 (n=25).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite: LL3 (S1) W1. Low metal content and magnetic susceptibility indicates LL chondrite. Large variation in olivine and Ca-poor pyroxene compositions, low Cr2O3 wt% in ferroan olivine and presence of microcrystalline chondrule mesostasis suggest a subtype LL3.3.

Specimens: Type specimen ROM; main mass Gregory
