Writeup from MB 111:

Sierra Gorda 060        22°30.02’S, 69°2.63’W

Antofagasta, Chile

Find: 15 Mar 2021

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H3)

Petrography: The meteorite has chondritic texture and is composed of chondrules (av. diameter 640 um), chondrule fragments, and mineral grains with interstitial, fine-grained, clastic matrix. The main phases are olivine, pyroxene, feldspatic glass, Fe,Ni iron and troilite; chromite and Ca-phosphate are accessory. The chondrules are of the BO, PO, PP, CC, BP, POP, RP types. Chondrule mesostasis is isotropic. Olivine has undulatory optical extinction and irregular fracturing. Local melt pockets and discontinuous melt veins were observed. Bulk Fe,Ni metal abundance is 4.6 vol.%, which is intermediate between the metal content of H and L chondrites (7.80±0.62 vol%, n=25, and 3.54±0.34 vol%, n=53, respectively, from Gattacceca et al., 2014).

Geochemistry: Olivine: Fa20.2±4.3 (N=17), PMD Fa = 14.6%; pyroxene Fs12.9±5.9Wo1.0±0.5 (N=16); kamacite (Borisovsky S. E., EPMA, IGEM, all in wt.%): Ni=6.02±0.34; Co=0.52±0.04 (N=6).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite, H3. The metal content, and metal composition are intermediate between H and L groups, and chondrules are larger than in typical H3 chondrites.
