Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL5)

History: On the morning of July 20, 2015, at 8:35 am, a woman observed an unknown object falling from the sky into a local farmer’s rice field in Botohilitano, Nias, North Sumatra, Indonesia. She informed the landowner of what she saw and pointed to where she thought the object had landed. He immediately went into the field to search for it. A single stone weighing approximately 5.8 kg was quickly discovered and wrapped in a white cloth for protection. Itremained in the home of the local man who recovered it ever since, a stone which he believed was an object of magic and good fortune. On June 7, 2021, Jared Collins traveled to Nias to acquire the stone from the farmer.

Physical characteristics: Single stone covered in fusion crust. Freshly broken surface reveals a light-gray interior with numerous medium-gray chondrules visible; scattered iron staining was observed.

Petrography: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) This meteorite consists of distinct chondrules set in a recrystallized groundmass. Plagioclase is up to 50 µm in size. Kamacite, taenite, troilite, Cl-rich apatite, and chromite were detected.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee, M. Spilde, UNM) Olivine Fa27.2±0.4, Fe/Mn=55±2, n=12; low-Ca pyroxene Fs22.5±0.1Wo1.4±0.2, Fe/Mn=32±1, n=6; augite Fs8.3±0.1Wo45.0±0.0, Fe/Mn=25±1, n=2.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL5)

Specimens: 22.6 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Jay Piatek holds the main mass.
