Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14808 (NWA 14808)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Nov

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3)

Physical characteristics: A single stone without fusion crust. Cut surface reveals large chondrules and large CAIs set in a dark matrix.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Millimeter-sized chondrules and CAIs to several mm in size set in abundant Fe-rich fine-grained matrix. Magnetite is abundant. Metal is rare and restricted to µm-sized blebs in silicates. No sulfide was found.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa10.9±7.2, range Fa4.1-22.1 (n=6). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs3.1±3.5Wo1.1±0.1, range Fs1.0-12.1 (n=8). Magnetite Cr2O3 0.64±0.53 wt% (n=5). Two type of fine-grained matrix are observed, with contrasted FeO content. Defocused analyses of the matrix: FeO 37.1 wt%, analytical total 92.7 wt% ; FeO 52.4 wt%, total 92.0 wt%.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3). Cvox group based on the elevated magnetite content and quasi-absence of metal. The elevated magnetite content (as indicated by the magnetic susceptibilty) indicates that the meteorite belongs to the CVoxB subgroup (Bali-type).

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Kuntz.
