Northwest Africa 14858 (NWA 14858) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2022 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5) History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Algeria. Physical characteristics: Grayish to dark greenish rock with some fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite displays a dark greenish interior and is composed of sparse, clearly defined and well separated chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 750 µm) in abundant recrystallized matrix dominated by ferroan Ni-bearing olivine. Minor phases are intermediate plagioclase, low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, pentlandite, and troilite. Cr-rich magnetite is abundant; no metal detected. Geochemistry: olivine: Fa27.0±0.2 (Fa26.7-27.4, FeO/MnO=101±9; NiO=0.35±0.04 wt%, n=12); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs25.4±1.4Wo0.5±0.1 (Fs23.7-28.3Wo0.4-0.7, n=6); Ca-pyroxene: Fs8.4±0.3Wo44.6±1.6 (Fs7.9-8.9Wo40.5-45.7, n=7); feldspar: An27.9-56.3Ab42.7-69.9Or1.0-2.2, n=7; magnetite contains 3.9±0.4 wt% Cr2O3, n=12 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
