Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14859 (NWA 14859)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Algeria.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a grayish to light brownish interior and is composed of separated and well-defined partly flattened chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 800 µm) and few CAIs (up to 3 mm) in a fine-grained ferroan matrix. Chondrules often have igneous rims. Highly unequilibrated olivine and low-Ca pyroxene are the dominating mineral phases. Less abundant phases include Ca-pyroxene, intermediate plagioclase, and very minor FeS. Cr-bearing magnetite is abundant; metal was not detected.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa15.0±13.5 (Fa1.0-39.8, n=15); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs1.5±0.8Wo1.0±0.1 (Fs0.8-3.1Wo0.9-1.2, n=10); magnetite compositions (wt%): Cr2O3=2.30±0.95, TiO2=0.38±0.17, NiO=0.28±0.03, Al2O3=2.96±0.27 (n=12).
