Northwest Africa 14863 (NWA 14863)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish fragment without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a coarse-grained polymict breccia composed of up to 3 mm sized basaltic and impact melt clasts plus up to 1.5 mm sized mineral fragments set in fine-grained clastic matrix. Mineral phases are predominantly exsolved pyroxene, compositionally zoned low-Ca pyroxene, and calcic plagioclase grains. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and troilite. No metallic iron detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs52.4±0.4Wo2.5±0.8 (Fs51.9-53.1Wo1.7-3.5, FeO/MnO=29-31, n=6); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs22.2±0.2Wo43.7±0.2 (Fs21.9-22.6Wo43.4-44.0, FeO/MnO=24-28, n=7); zoned low-Ca pyroxene: Fs48.6±4.3Wo1.9±0.04 (Fs40.4-52.5Wo1.9-2.0, FeO/MnO=31-37, n=6); calcic plagioclase: An89.5±1.4 (An87.5-91.4, n=7)
