Northwest Africa 14926 (NWA 14926)

Purchased: 2021 Oct

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4)

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in October 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed chondrules containing devitrified glass are set in a relatively coarse-grained matrix containing fresh kamacite, subcalcic augite, troilite and chromite, but no plagioclase. Olivine in chondrules is equilibrated but low-Ca pyroxene is unequilibrated. A 3 mm fine-grained igneous clast containing acicular pyroxene phenocrysts and devitrified glassy mesostasis is present in the studied thin section.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.1±0.2, range Fa22.9-25.0, N = 8), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs17.2±6.5Wo2.4±2.8, range Fs5.6-20.4Wo0.4-7.3, N = 5), subcalcic augite (Fs11.4Wo34.0).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4).

Specimens: 20.5 g including one polished thin section at PSF; remainder with Mr. J. Whitcomb.
