Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 14660 (NWA 14660) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Jul Classification: Ungrouped achondrite History: Purchased by Ziyao Wang in July 2021 from a dealer in Agadir, Morocco. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Protogranular texture (mean grainsize 0.4 mm). Composed predominantly of olivine (~50 vol.%) and orthopyroxene (~40 vol.%) together with accessory augite, taenite (with variable Fe/Ni ratios), kamacite (altered), troilite and low-Ti chromite, plus minor secondary Fe hydroxides and calcite. No plagioclase or phosphates were observed. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa30.5-30.9, FeO/MnO = 62-66, N = 4), orthopyroxene (Fs24.8-25.0Wo2.2-2.3, N = 3), augite (Fs9.8-9.9Wo44.4±0.0, N = 2). Classification: Achondrite (ungrouped, ultramafic, brachinite-like). The specimen differs from true brachinites (like Brachina) in having orthopyroxene instead of augite as the dominant pyroxene phase. The absence of plagioclase precludes this specimen from being an LL7 chondrite. Specimens: 22.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with WangZ. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
