Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 14934 (NWA 14934) Mauritania Purchased: 2022 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated) History: A single piece was found by a nomad from undisclosed coordinates in northwest Africa. The meteorite was eventually purchased by Carlos Muñecas (Expometeoritos) from a dealer in Mauritania. Physical characteristics: Sample has a dark brown exterior with an irregular shape. The cut face shows an igneous texture. Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample has a brecciated texture composed of sparse gabbroic clasts (pigeonite up to 600µm in length) enclosed within a finer-grained (pigeonite up to 150 µm) vesicular and vuggy, subophitic-textured lithology composed of lath-shaped plagioclase surrounding embayed, chaotically-zoned, polycrystalline aggregates of pigeonite. Additional minerals are: ilmenite, Ti-bearing chromite rare troilite, phosphates and a silica polymorph (some is lath-shaped). Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Pigeonite (Fs47.1±5.1Wo12.2±2.4, Mg#46.3±6.8, Fe/Mn=30.5±1.7, n=23); plagioclase (An91.2±3.2Or0.0, n=8). Classification: HED achondrite (eucrite breccia). Based on grain size of clasts, plagioclase compositions, Fe/Mn ratios of pigeonite and texture, sample is a gabbroic eucrite breccia. Specimens: Carlos Muñecas (Expometeoritos) holds the main mass. A polished thin section and 58.55 g endcut are on deposit at App. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
